Looking at the Microsoft numbers I have to come to the conclusion that profitability isn't their primary aim. If it is they have failed. But these results give alot more weight to the argument they entered the industry to stop sony's advance in the living room.

As for Sony it is clear their financials have gone downhill since the ps3 and no one can argue this. They probably expected to take losses but not on this scale. Everything made in the ps2 years has been eaten up in rece...

my original source when I posted before was up to 2000 but i've found the 2 previous years. 1998 was the first year sony gave out numbers for its gaming division separately.

FY* Sony**
1998 974,000,000
1999 1,130,000,000
2000 730,000,000
2001 -409,000,000
2002 623,000,000
2003 939,000,000
2004 650,000,000
2005 404,000,000 ...

And thank you for bringing facts into this. However expect those facts to be ignored though. The 2 consoles are selling fine - at least their doing better than the finances of their game divisions!

'were ahead of our nearest rival'.

Yes MS but what about your other rival that is about 20 million ahead of you.

EDIT: Yes its strange how everyone in 2006, including MS and Sony, seemed to think the wii counted. Oh well, jealousy and all that.

nintendo is the king. And anyway revenue is not the really important figure. It is profits that determine a successful console and this is why financially the ps3 and 360 are failures. Nintendo is raking in the money but sony and MS. I could post figures showing MS's huge losses and sony's huge losses since 2006 which have wiped out all the profits made from the ps2 if you wish.

the figures to be released at the end of january go up to last quarter -31st of december so I think 8 million may be a tad optimistic but it will be close!

because we have the ACTUAL numbers from the companies themselves. NPD, media create etc may be accurate but they are still estimations like vgchartz. Also what about the small markets such as Australia, South and Central America, China, India, Brazil that your figures are missing?

Also if vgchartz is so unreliable why have you used their 2007 figures as your basis. Wouldn't that make your figures unreliable? Im sorry but vgchartz is alot closer than you are.

over 16 million and 22 million units respectively to retailers at the end of september which already debunks your figures. Vgchartz is alrite. Not completely accurate but in the right ballpark.

Vgchartz figures are based on the best sales figures- the 3 companies themselves.

vgchartz weekly numbers may be debatable but overall they are accurate because they are based off the figures that MS, SOny and Nintendo give out.

Are you seriously suggesting that the xbox is at 22 million and the ps3 at 14 million?

I can bet you anything that when the big 3 announce their new shipped figures in a few weeks time that the wii will be near 50 million, 360 around 28-29 million and the ps3 21-22 million.

EDIT: The link you posted sho...

its just the way things seem to be. PS3 at 19 million is doing brilliantly as is the 360 at 27 million. Even the is flamed and disregared even though it is the most successful console ever and approaching 50 million units sold.

You clicked on the link to post that? Did you read the article? Hmm... oh dear.

with comments like that its a shame to see videogame journalism for what it is - immature and dumb.

The people that still belive the wii is a fad are the same people that don't understand why it is selling so well. It is a consumer revolution and far from being a fad. Unless the definition of a fad has changed to a product that lasts 10 years.

especially in this financial climate.

it is determined by sales. The ps1 and ps2 were huge successes and were viable platforms to continue production into the following gen. The xbox and gamecube were not (forgetting MS problems with get parts for the xbox). Will the ps3 be as successful? I think the wii, 360 and ps3 will all have a presence into the start of next gen. But if only one company is going to support their console into next gen then it will be nintendo as they have by far the biggest userbase - approaching 50 million....

Sony is a business which is out there to make profits. Simple. If it was more profitable to cancel the ps3 they would. But the simple reasoning is it isn't so they won't. What they need is to sell more hardware and software and get costs of production down. From here they will be in a much better position than they are now. They have great software coming out in the coming year and hopefully this will help. Are people seriously suggesting that the best way to re-coup the $4 billion that the p...

anyone who believes sony won't release a ps4 in the next4 years is living in dreamland. There is no way they will let Microsoft 1up them again with the release of a console.

6226d ago 2 agree3 disagreeView comment

CoD games will still be made. But instead they may have worse graphics with better controls. When the xbox 720, wii HD and ps4 all release in 2011/2012 then maybe we will get the best of both worlds.

Are you saying there will be no MGS5, GTA5, Zelda, FF14? That is just an irrational fear bourne out of jealousy of the wii's success. One minute 3rd parties aren't supporting hte wii, the next there going to cancel all their projects and put shvelware on the wii. Which is it? And have you even looked at the wii's lineup next year before bashing it? It is far from just shovelware.

And so called 'journalists' who write this stuff. Its not just sony that suffers but nintendo and Microsoft have suffered just as much. I could give you a brief history if you want:

2006: Wii is doomed!
2007: Ps3 is doomed!
2008: Xbox 360 is doomed!
Late 2008: PS3 is doomed!

So whos next to be a target of the irrational articles!?
